Utah NHL team opens online fan vote to decide franchise’s name

The Utah-based NHL franchise may not have a name, mascot or brand identity for its inaugural season in 2024, but that will change in 2025.

Team owner Ryan Smith, who also owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz, put out a link on Wednesday evening for fans to vote on the name of the yet-to-be-determined franchise. The link gives voters 20 potential nicknames to choose from, of which they can submit their four favorites.

Voting for the first round will stay open through May 22, and a second round of voting with additional steps will be announced later in the summer.

Smith also announced that the team will wear jerseys that just say Utah on them for the 2024-25 season and will have a full rollout of its new branding (complete with a logo, colors and mascot) the following offseason.

While the brand image of the hockey club has yet to be determined, it appears Smith has a preliminary vision in mind already.

“If you look at the mountains on the [Jazz] jersey, that breeds a little bit of a color palette naturally, of fresh ice, blue skies, you see that,” Smith said on the “32 Thoughts” podcast. “In a dream scenario, there’s a Venn diagram where you’ve got the Jazz and this team…where things could overlap.

“You’ve got to leave a little room for teams to get out and do special stuff that’s not going to be part of that diagram, but I think there can be a really cool symmetry, and I don’t think it has to just be like Pittsburgh or everything else where everything’s the exact same color.”
